The ‘five-a-day’ fruit mantra !

For more than ten years I’ve known that the ‘five-a-day’ mantra we’re all so familiar with is nothing but a fairytale. But the fact is only three in ten adults eat the recommended five-a-day.

But I am not like that. I am good boy. I definitely eat five fruits a day, but only in summer. Summer, when the market (pick anywhere in the world) is flooded with Mangoes, the king of fruits. Do have to eat five different fruits or five mangoes are fine as well? And for last one month, that's all I eat for my dinner.

Health Benefits? Kidding me? Why should I eat them otherwise? Noooooow. Just kidding. I shall continue to eat them anyways whether they have health benefits or not. Unfortunately they are not available throughout the year, but only in summer.

But they do have health benefits as well. In mango fruit pulp, the antioxidant vitamins A and C, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), folate, other B vitamins and essential nutrients, such as potassium, copper and amino acids, are present. Mango peel and pulp contain other compounds, such as pigment carotenoids and polyphenols, and omega-3 and -6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.

In case, this inspires you to go out, look for mangoes - please look for the "Alfrensco", "Badami" or "Keshar". They are just out of the world.

Reminds me of a time, when quintals of mangoes produced in our garden and sold to the market every week. I hardly touched a mango. But now, decades later, in a different part of the world, I am craving for mangoes so much that I am happy to pay a rock-solid premium. So is with Coconuts. Barely touched them in my childhood, when Coconut trees in our garden produced about 200/week. And now when I go back home, I drink 15-20 coconuts at a time. SUCH IS LIFE. But nothing wrong. That is the truth and that is the succession. We realise the true value of something; only by staying away from it.
